Cal Poly Soil and Water Resources
Presented by Dr. Del Dingus

Land can be divided into eight Land Capability Classes so designated by the degree of management needed to keep the soil productive for intensive crop production. Soils are grouped according to their limitation for intensive agriculture use. Class I and II are soils having few limitations. Class VIII soils can be used for recreation only. The top of Bishop Peak is a good example of Class VIII land. The area around the Crops Unit is Class I land. Most of the acres on Cal Poly Land are estimated to be in Class VII and VIII categories. These acres are mostly suitable for open space.
