The above soils map of Cal Poly land was produced by the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). Lines are drawn around the boundary of each soil. The soil within the boundary is identified by a Mapping Unit Symbol. Note how the vegetated areas are often separated into distinct soil types. Soils and vegetation pattern often coincide. The same soil on different slopes has been separated into distinct mapping units based upon managent requirements.
