Mating/Reproduction

• Breeding intervals occur once a year and the most typical time for egg fertilization is between May and July. During that 3 month span is when viable sperm is at its highest concentration in males.

• The females lay approximately 6 to 28 eggs per season, and they take between 22 to 23 days to hatch.


• The eggs are pointed ovals are creamy- white in color with light golden brown spots.

• If California Quail do not successfully nest on their first attempt, they then make a second nesting attempt later in the summer.

• Their nests are made in shallow scrapes in the ground lined with grass and leaves.
