Physical Description: Size:
24-34 cm, Wing span:
43-56 cm, long barred tail with square tip, dark gray back and rufous barring on the breast. No sexually dimorphism in plumage. Female larger than male. Overall, smaller than Cooper's Hawk.
Habitat: Breeds from California up to Alaska in coniferous forests. Winters across the U.S. During non-breeding can be found in various habitats.
Diet: Feeds primarilly on birds which it can catch flying through dense canopy. Short broad wings and a long tail allow great manueverability in flight.
