Our Bird Watching Experience

We began our hike at 6:00pm on April 30th, 2004, with Dr. Johanna Rubba, of Cal Poly State University, SLO. Our hike took place at Poly Canyon, where we observed many different species of birds. The birds we saw were, the Black Phoebe, Red tailed hawk, Cliff Swallow, House Finch, Mourning Dove, Lesser Goldfinch, Turkey Vulture, Black Crow, Scrub Jay, Western Blue Bird, Anna’s Hummingbird, California Quail, California Towhee, and a Stellar Jay.

The supplies we took along with us on the bird watching trip included binoculars, water, warm clothing and field guides. Once we saw a bird we looked at it, observed its physical features, then attempted to identify it with our field guides. Dr. Rubba assisted us with what characteristics to look for on each bird, in order to recognize the correct species we were observing. She was attentive to bird songs which aided in identifying bird species we were listening to.

We thoroughly enjoyed our bird watching experience with Dr. Rubba because we learned so much from her about birds. In the near future, we plan on going bird watching hikes to further and expand our knowledge about birds and their characteristics. We want to give thanks to Dr. Rubba for her time and efforts in assisting us with this project.
