The Pier at Avila

Picture Gallery

The Cal Poly pier was obtained from Unocal as a donation for the environmental contamination that they left behind. Unoca'sl donation was in efforts to improve the research of marine environments, like the ones they contaminated. The University received an $500,000 endowment inorder to maintain and run the pier. The pier has many flora and fauna from the ocean community and presents many research opportunities for Cal Poly students, especially the marine science department. There are ideas for future improvements that will tend to the needs of the students. It is the only steel pier in the nation. For additional information, click on one of the links at the top of the page.

The intended purpose of the pier is listed in the mission statement below. The purpose of the pier will most likely change as students and faculty begin to find out about the usefulness as a supplement to the curriculum.

Mission Statement: To promote and facilitate basic and applied interdisciplinary studies of coastal marine systems for the purpose of addressing environmental concerns and fostering hands-on student learning through discovery and outreach.
