Mosquitofish
Gambustia
affinis, Poeciliidae
Mosquitofish grow to 2 1/2 inches long. They are tan to olive-colored
above, pale yellowish below. Their scales have dusky spots near
the edges, and they have a dark bar below their eyes. The dorsal
and caudal fins of these fish are spotted. The mouth is small,
with the lower jaw sticking out beyond the upper jaw, and the
teeth are also small. Mosquitofish swim near the surface and
take their name from their food source: mosquito larvae.
