Cal Poly Soil and Water Resources
Presented by Dr. Del Dingus

Note the fire trail cut into the Lodo soil. This soil is shallow and has formed from hard sandstone and a material locally identified as "red rock". The shallow Lodo soil is commonly covered with grasses and forbs. It is subject to high erosion rates when over grazed. California black sage and Monkey flower are common plant species growing on the Lodo soil.
