Soil and Water Sites
on Cal Poly Land
Salinas Soil

The Salinas series is a very deep and well-drained soil that has formed
on water transported alluvium derived from sedimentary rocks and
deposited along streams. The soil fills valley floors as alluvial fans
and plains. Included with the soil are small areas of Cropley and Mocho
soils. The Cropley soil contains more clay while the Mocho has a
neutral pH throughout the profile. Our best and most productive farmland
is located on these soils. The area around the Crops Unit, the Citrus
Orchard, the alfalfa fields along Highland Drive and Field 25 (the
vegetable plots along Highway 1) are underlain by these soils. They are
listed as Class I and II land when irrigated. Cal Poly has control of
less than 100 acres of these excellent soils. It is often a challenge
to prevent development on these prime agriculture resources.
