Located on
the North corner of Cal Poly's land, Shooters is a technically
demanding single track trail. There are numerous routes to get
to both the bottom and top of the trail, depending on whether
you want a gut busting climb, or a technically demanding downhill,
or a combination of the two. The views from the top extend from
Point Sal in the South all the way North to Morro Bay and Cayucos.
On a clear day in the morning it is even possible to see the waves
breaking on the beach.
To get to
the top of the trail you can either ride up it, if you have the
right style of bike, or, for those lazy enough, it is possible
to drive to the top, unload your bike and continue down the mountain.
This is the perfect alternative for those thrill seekers whose
style is geared towards downhill riding rather than cross-country
excursions. To get to the bottom of the trail, take Stenner Creek
rd. all the way away from campus until stops at Serrano Ranch.
Then, since the gate is usually
locked, hoist your bike over the gate just across Stenner Creek
and ride to the left, away from the old
barn. The trail follows Stenner Creek as it passes through
grassland, chapparal, and Oak environments. Just before the rail
road tracks, the trail steepens into a fairly steep climb. At
the 'tracks' riders can either cross straight over them, leading
to a very steep and
tough climb, or he/she can ride West along the tracks for fifty
yards until they reach a trail leading past a barbed wire fence
up to a fire road. This is the easiest way to get up to the beginning
of Shooters, easier in this sense meaning slightly more boring.
Once the trail flattens out, take a left hand turn and continue
up the ridge, YOU ARE NOW CLIMBING SHOOTERS (feel free to make
sounds like a car going really fast). Climbing shooters can be
a very challenging journey, the ride is seemingly endless with
a long drop on one side of the rider, but as mentioned before,
the view at the top is quite
a reward. Take a tour of
the same trail, but back down.
