Remembrance Pond

The Cal Poly Remembrance Pond was dedicated in 1954 as a memorial to Ted Howes, the department head and an instructor for Ornamental Horticulture from 1932 to the time of his death in 1952. After Howes’ death, a movement quickly emerged among OH students to construct a memorial in their teacher’s honor. An old pond built in the 1930s that surrounded a natural rock outcropping was renovated for the memorial. Plants for the project were donated by the California Nurserymen’s Association and Cal Poly students and faculty raised money to cover the cost of constructing the memorial, a testament to the impact Howes had on the campus community. Students from the OH Club did the planting and construction of the remembrance pond, which was dedicated in 1953.

Plant Spotlight: Golden Trumpet Tree (Tabebuia chrysotricha)
Silvery leaves with fuzzy undersides create the expansive canopy of the Golden Trumpet Tree. During the spring, the tree loses its leaves and flowers heavily with its amazing trumpet-shaped, bright yellow blossoms.

Quiet seating area surrounding the pond and waterfall.

Student lounging in the shade on the rock outcrop.
