The Pier at Avila

The Cal Poly pier at Avila was donation from the oil company, Unocal, as an effort to improve the research of marine environments. This plan includes studying the ecosystems that were contaminated in 1988 and still remain effected today. The University received an $500,000 endowment in order to maintain and run the only steel pier in the nation. Cal Poly's pier at Avila has access to a wide variety of flora and fauna in the surrounding ocean community and presents many research opportunities for Cal Poly students. This is especially true for individuals in the marine science department. There are many ideas for future developments and projects that students will be able to be involved in. For additional information, click on one of the links at the top of the page.

The intended purpose of the pier is listed in the mission statement below. The future plans for the pier will most likely change and progress as students and faculty become more aware of this useful resource as a supplement to curriculum.

Mission Statement: To promote and facilitate basic and applied interdisciplinary studies of coastal marine systems for the purpose of addressing environmental concerns and fostering hands-on student learning through discovery and outreach.
