Sheep

There are two major flocks that are maintained and housed at several different locations throughout Cal Poly Land. However, Cheda Ranch and the Serrano Unit are the primary locations of Cal Poly's sheep.

Cal Poly's crossbred "range type" flock is comprised of approximately 130 ewes that are referred to as the "whiteface" flock. The ewes are of Rambouillet, Targhee and Finnish backgrounds. They are exposed to minimal barn time and are used primarily for market. The picture above displays the crossbred flock grazing on the Cheda Ranch lands.

The regular flock that roam Cal Poly's lands are Suffolk sheep. They are bred and sold to individuals. Cal Poly has been at or near the top of the California Ram Sale over the past 10 years based upon average sale price.
