Rainbow Trout

Onorhynchus Mykiss, or the Rainbow Trout, is in the Salmonidae family of fish. It is a very adaptable fish that is native to the Eastern Pacific. It can be found in many different habitats, including Cal Poly's own creeks.

The average trout weighs between two and four pounds and is between seven to eight inches long. However, they can grow to over 18 inches long and weigh in at over eight pounds. Rainbow Trout eat small fish, worms and aquatic insects.

These fish are a metallic blue color on top and white below near the belly. The trout has brown spots on it's back, sides and fins. The trout also has a characteristic red stripe along it's side.

Rainbow Trout are farmed in many areas for U-Fish, retail, and in order to provide seed stock for marine grow out sites.
