The Quarry

One of my favorite places to watch the sunset is at the old quarry half way up Poly Canyon.  It offers a secluded spot to watch the sunset with a close friend or your significant other along with a beautiful view of San Luis Obispo and the surrounding mountains.  I recommend packing a picnic, putting on your official sunset watching hat and glasses, and biking your way up to this wonderful spot.  Here are some of my favorite sunset pictures from one of my viewings from the quarry.

Quarry Sunset 1

This is a shot from the top of the quarry about ten minutes before the sun ducked behind the hills.

Quarry Sunset 2                     Quarry Sunset 3

On this evening the light, wispy clouds helped to make a spectacular sunset by reflecting the sun's rays in beautiful shades of red across the sky.

Quarry Sunset 4

Here the sun is nicely framed between two eucalyptus trees as it slowly sinks towards the horizon.  I took both of these pictures about halfway up the path to the quarry.

Sunsets are not the only viewing pleasures at this spot.  While I was there I also saw at least five deer.

In order to get to the Quarry, you simply head up Poly Canyon just to the left of the Cerro Vista apartments.  Once you are on this road, continue for half of a mile until you come to another road on the left.  Take this road past the yellow gate until you reach the top, and then you are at the quarry.  It is well worth the hike.

Quarry Sunset 9

The following is a poem that I wrote later that evening after reflecting on the sunset I had viewed earlier that night. Hopefully you will enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

Sun's Life

See the sun set in the sky,
Where did it go, did it die?
As the blackness comes down,
And all the lights go on in town.
I wonder if life is like the sun,
When we die are we really done?
Or will we rise to walk again.
Like the sun, that has forever been.
