Moses Striking Water From the Rock (1645-1650)

By Jacob Jordaens

Numbers 20:11 (KJV): And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.

Explanation:In this painting, a crowd of Israelites gathers to observe a dramatic Old Testament miracle. After they wandered in the wilderness of the Sinai desert without water, God saved them by instructing Moses to strike a rock with his staff. After striking the rock, fresh water gushed out, meaning that God created a natural spring for his chosen people.
