California Red-Sided Gartersnake

Thamnophis Sirtalis Inferalis, Concinnus

The California Red-Sided Gartersnake is found along coastal California, specifically around permanent or semi-permanent areas of water. Therefore, this snake is wonderfully acclimated to the several creek areas found on Cal Poly Land. They are very noticible due to their colorful appearance. The color of the snake varies from snake to snake, but they all have yellow or white stripes on their backs and sides and they produce a musky smell when handled by humans. The California Red-Sided Gartersnake ranges from 18 to 52 inches long. The snake hibernates during the winter, but can be found during spring, summer, and fall.
