The development of soil horizons from a parent material is illustrated in the above figure. Exposed rocks break down (weather) and release the essential nutrients for plants and animals locked within. As weathering progresses, the resulting soil can support more complex plant communities. The age of soils is based upon the number and complexity of master horizons. Most landscapes in California and especially those on Poly Land are very young.
