RIDING ALONG THE RAILROAD TRACKS

Accessible from certain points along the Great Loop trail and the ride up Stenner Canyon from Serrano Ranch, the train tracks offer an easy ride complete with great views of San Luis Obispo County. For most of the ride, you follow a trail that runs parallel to the railroad lines giving the trail good and bad characteristics. Rocks lining either side of the tracks present numerous places to get a flat tire, however, the ride is fairly flat allowing people to cover greater distances and see more of the countryside. The ride along the tracks away from the main biking trails of Cal Poly’s lands takes the rider around two tunnels and eventually leads down to the historic Old Stagecoach Road. At this “T” in the road, riders can either travel to the top of the grade or coast down to the highway taking take the easy way home. Taking the long uphill climb will give easy access to the start of the shooters trail and nearby Morning Glory. Continuing along the road and passing the trail head to Shooters, riders will come to the entrance of the San Luis Obispo Botanical Gardens.

This long loop has several variations which results in several different lengths of the ride. Each variation does offer its fair share of both speed and endurance great for any beginner or intermediate rider.
