First obstacle...
Check out the serpentinite rock outcropping just ahead. It was
formed somewhere between 200 and 65 million years ago during the
Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The serpentinite weathers to
soils deficient in many soluble metals such as potassium and sodium,
creating conditions lacking the nutrients and minerals necessary
for strong vegetation coverage. Without some sort of substantial
ground coverage, the area is very susceptible to erosion which
reveals the rocks.
