Cal Poly’s final land acquisition was the Swanton Pacific Ranch, a 3,200 acre ranch left to the school in the will of Albert (Al) Smith in December 1993. The ranch is located twelve miles north of Santa Cruz, and consists of extensive irrigated crop and range lands, a Timber Preserve Zone for commercial harvesting, several forested areas, and a one-third gauge steam railroad.
