The founding of Cal Poly was a matter of timing and the impetus of Myron Angel. Angel arrived in 1883 on assignment for the Thompson and West Company to write a history for the county atlas. He liked what he saw, and settled in San Luis Obispo, later becoming one of its leading citizens.
