From The Story of Lan Luis Obispo Country

Mission San Luis Obispo was one of the wealthiest in the system as result of agriculture and grazing. The soil was ideal for the production of large crops of wheat to support the mission population. Grazing also became a predominant enterprise. In its prime, the mission land held over 80,000 cattle, and an equal number of each sheep, horses, and mules. However, the impact of grazing was severe as the stock grazed on the grasslands that the Chumash had so carefully tended, and left trampled terraces on the hills. Finally, the conversion of the land to agriculture and grazing effectively made the transition to a new ecological balance.
