Varieties

There are 7 different varieties of avocados: Hass, Bacon, Zutano, Gwen, Pinkerton, Fuerte, and Reed. The Hass is the most popular variety and accounts for 85 percent of California 's avocado crop volume.

Bacon: Origin Buena Park . Hybrid. Tree is broad and productive. Fruit is small to medium, about 12 oz., round-ovoid, smooth green. Flesh is fair, almost colorless. Seed cavity molds rapidly. Hardy for Bay Area and Central Valley .

Fuerte: Origin is Atlixco , Mexico . Tree open, spreading, tall. Fruit large to very large, about 16 oz., elongated pyriform, skin is dark green with numerous small raised pale spots, waxy bloom, skin thin. Flesh good, oil 18%, seed medium. Tends to bear fruit in alternate years. Unproductive near coast or in north

Gwen: Origin Riverside . Seedling of Hass. Tree dwarf, about 14 ft., low vigor. Fruit is small, about 8 oz., a Hass look alike, elongated green, flesh is good. Most productive of dwarf avocados, best dwarf for outdoor use, also for containers, greenhouse.

Hass: Origin Rudolph Hass, La Habra Heights . Seedling of a Lyon variety. Guatemalan. Tree is rather open, not tall. Fruit is medium, about 12 oz. Skin is thick, pebbled, coppery purple. Flesh is good, oil 19%, seed fairly small. Currently the standard of the industry.

Pinkerton: Origin Saticoy. Guatemalan. Tree is dense and productive. Fruit varies in size, about 7 to 12 oz. Skin is thick, pebbled, and green. Season is November.

Reed: Origin Carlsbad . Hybrid. Tree is columnar. Fruit is large, about 15 oz. Skin is thick, pebbled, and black. Round in shape. Flesh good.

Zutano: Origin Fallbrook. Hybrid. Tree columnar. Fruit is small to medium, about 10 oz. Elongated smooth green, resembles Fuerte but inferior, it has fibers. Hardy for Bay Area, Central Valley .
