Farm Features

The Student Experimental Farm consists of interesting student projects. Some of these projects are as follows.

  • The Packing Shed: Completed in Spring of 2004, this building serves as a station for packaging produce before it is distributed to the community. The shed has increased the efficiency of the farm's packaging capabilities.

  • The Green House: As of Spring 2004, the greenhouse's cement foundation has been laid, but the remainder of the project has yet to be completed. The greenhouse will allow for the beginning stages of growth to occur on site, instead of at the Arboretum.

  • The Strawbale House: At a cost of only $1,000, this award winning structure was the project of an Architecture student. Up to the completion of the Packing Shed, the Strawbale House served as packaging center for the farm. They are now planning on putting in a packed dirt floor in order to make the building into an office.

  • Composting Area: Located on the north-western edge of the property, this an essential component to sustain the land.

  • Festival Circle: This area is bordered on the north-west side by a decorative wall that also serves as a wind barrier. The wall was created out of strawbales, and designed to mimic the surrounding hills. A large grassy area surrounded by varying plant life, the Festival Circle will be utilized for social gatherings such as poetry readings and concerts.

  • Vermiculture Bins: These bins house worms that are used for composting.

  • Sales Office: The networking center of the farm.

  • Restroom: A living system, this is yet another sustainable aspect of the farm. The restroom utilizes sawdust, instead of water, which can then be buried and regenerated into the soil.

  • Upper Frog Pond: This project is under construction.

  • Retention Pond with Native Plants: This pond is bordered by Eucalyptus trees that serve as a wind barrier. This unique habitat is home to several native plant species and frogs.

  • Organic Vegetable Growing Area: Used to grow the organic vegetables sold to the community. It also has areas where students can complete agricultural experiments.

  • Irrigation: Portable aluminum sprinklers are the main mode of irrigation.
  • Biointensive Agricultural Project:
