Future

The Student Experimental Farm was created as a place for people to learn and explore the aspects of sustainable agriculture. Under the management of the HCS department and SARC the vision of sustainable agriculture has expanded to include additional organic lands in Field 25 as well as a few other blocks in other fields not certified organic, as well as developing the CSA program. However further growth and progress is envisioned.

Expansion of the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program to serve a greater portion of the local community.

  • As part of this effort, the farm now has made available flower subscriptions as well as the produce subscriptions.
  • Converting the office building to a place for holding class meetings and a kitchen.
  • To further the community involvement it is an objective to make the farm area a gathering place to hold organized events. With the completion of the Festival Circle and further beautifiing projects, restoring the upper frog pond and improving the building facilities, this will increase the aesthetic value of the area.

Increase involvement and awareness in the Cal Poly Community:

  • As part of the SARC program the course Organic Agriculture (AG 315) has been offered. Additional courses and methods of student involvement are now becoming available as well. the Continuing Education Course on Biointensive Farming.
  • The University has also increased its support of the SEF with improvements to the infrastructure of the farm, irrigation systems, water allotments, and use of farm equipment.
  • Student enterprise program in Organinc Vegetable Production.
  • As part of the sustainability movement additional Cal Poly agricultural lands have been converted to organic farming practices, and it is hopeful that even more land will be included.

Planned and in progress improvements to the Infrastructure to help meet the goals of the Farm and SARC:

  • Completion of the green house will allow produce grown on the farm to be started on site rather than at the Horticulture green houses.
  • Installation of wind and solar power generators, furthering the sustainablity of the Farm even further.
  • Restoration and beautification of existing facilities, including the upper frog pond, straw bale building, and the office building.
