The
Cal Poly Swine Unit is located past Baggett Stadium and sits on
15 acres. The facilities
are equipped for an all-in-all-out system of operations, where
animals are kept in groups and moved from barn to barn together.
Between moving hogs to the next location, their new barn is washed
and sterilized. This method is used to prevent disease transfer
among new and old groups.
Pigs
are sold to the community as slaughter hogs, FFA show pigs, and
breeding stock. Three boars and 20-30 sows are used for breeding
and provide students the opportunity for an overview of the swine
industry in the introductory Swine Science class. The facilities
are also used by students who have chosen a senior project which
requires the use of pigs.
