Sheep Unit

Cal Poly Sheep page

Cal Poly’s sheep unit is the most isolated from campus, situated off of Santa Rosa slightly past Stenner Creek Road at Cheda Ranch. The commercial breed of sheep kept at the facilities is the “white faced” sheep which many students work with during class labs. Suffolk purebreds are then mostly used for enterprises which allow students a further hand on approach to the industry. Enterprises include the Lamb Feedlot Enterprise, Ram Enterprise, Commercial Ewe Enterprise, and Lambing Crew Enterprise.

Approximately 130 sheep make up the flocks usually found grazing the 140 acres that make up Cheda Ranch. The newer facilities also contain a shearing barn and wool packing machine that help make money to support this program.
