The
poultry
unit was completed in 1995 and stands at the North Western
End of campus. It is the newest facility
of the animal units, and thus one the most state of the art.
The poultry unit has a partnership with Foster Farms and is
therefore supported mostly by private research grants and corporate
funds. Here, students are able to get first hand experience
in poultry production as well as in the greater poultry industry.
The eggs produced by the laying hens are sold all over the county
as well as parts of Santa Barbara County. Along with raising
laying hens, in conjunction with Foster Farms, Cal Poly students
raise broilers to be sold for nationwide consumption. There
are several student enterprises
that include all aspects of the poultry production industry.
The poultry unit was built on Class 1 agricultural land, which
has caused some controversy. This land contains the most valuable
soil for farming purposes and its development worries those
who see it as a diminishing commodity.
