Feeding

Below: Troughs located near the fence prove useful at feeding time but encourage intense soil compaction and erosion from increased foot traffic of animals.

Below: Note how the combination of compaction and erosion cause a "Pedestalling" effect on this intensive feeding area. The fine dirt is easily eroded by both wind and water.

Below: Concentration of animals at regular feeding sites causes increased soil compaction. Heavily disturbed areas appeal to invasive noxious weeds, such as thistle, and prevent desireable native species. Location of feeding areas should be irregular so animals tread evenly throughout the site.
