Serpentinite Locations on Cal Poly Land

Serpentinite Peaks

From this position on the western face of Poly Mountain, it is possible to view Cal Poly's holdings of successive peaks along the Coastal Ranges' Franciscan melange. In the immediate foreground is the face of Poly Mounatin, littered with serpentinite outcroppings. Front and center behind Poly Mounatin is Caballo Peak. The serpentinite soil is distinguished from the normal soil by the lighter gray color with minimal plant life, as the normal soil shows more vibrant greens, along with chapparel and sagebrush communites on its western slopes. To the right of Caballo Peak is Rockslide Ridge. Further behind is Kestral Crest with Stenner Canyon receding on its backside.

Caballo Peak

Here is a closer look at the hillside of Caballo Peak. It is easy to view how the permeable soil easily erodes to show rock outcroppings. Below is Poly Canyon.

Rockslide Ridge

Perched above Design Village is Rockslide Ridge, which has had a series of landslides due to the instability of serpentinite soil.

Serpentinite Outcrop on Poly Mountain

Hiking on the hills surrounding Cal Poly, you will ineveitably have to walk around the mammoth outcroppings. When viewing this location, as well as other hillsides, the gray color of the soils is distinguished as serpintinite.

Serpentinite Boulder near Cerro Vista

For a quick geology review, this boulder may be viewed by students walking out of the new student housing complex.

Sepentinite Pathway

This exemplary piece of serpentinite rock was sitting upright aling the path head up Poly Mounatin. Its streaking blue and green colorse are highly apparent. As water routes easily expose the rock, much of the "P" loop trail consists of serpentinite stairways.

Serpentinite Soil

The Poly "P" was built among serpentinite soil. It is apparent by the red soil and flakes of blue rock.

Landslide

A recent landslide deep into the poly Canyon trail exposed this group of serpentinite boulders.

Theatre Rock

Serpentinite can be found within the structural portion of campus as well. This one is located right by the performing arts center.

Lab Tables

Serpentinite also serves a function on campus, as found in the soil science laboratories.
