Western Ranches

This is a view from in front of the Chorro Creek Ranch shop over alfalfa and hay fields. Chorro Creek is in the background.

Although unknown to many, Cal Poly owns approximately 3,000 acres of land five miles north of the main campus. This land is referred to as "The Western Ranches." The Western Ranches were bought and developed by Cal Poly in an effort to give Cal Poly students more outdoor land for the chance to enhance their hands on learning. The Western Ranches are primarily used as an agriculture facility, consisting of approximately 3,000 acres of grazing land, hayfields, alfalfa fields and vineyards. In addition to agriculture, the land of the Western Ranches is also utilized as a biological preserve, a recreational area, an electronic flying range, and land for student enterprise projects.
