This flying range is maintained by the Aeronautical Engineering department in the College of Engineering. It is also the home of the Mustang Flyers and SLO Flyers, Inc. These are clubs that fly model airplanes and helicopters.

The creation of this project was sponsored by many local companies and businesses.
