Agriculture
and Cal Poly Land
|
|
- Early Cal Poly agriculture - all products were consumed on campus
- no competition with local merchants.
- Cal Poly agriculture prepared entrepreneurs - graduates who
would be prepared to start their own businesses upon graduation
- Cal Poly agriculture was distinct from Land Grant Universities
- as there weren't the tie to the strings of the USDA
- This type of agriculture could be considered Carbon Cycling
- More recently - due to the forces within the economy - Cal Poly
agriculture emphasis is preparing students for jobs - working
for others
- The jobs available will be determined by those companies enjoying
financial success
- Those financially successful companies will invest in Cal Poly
through research grants and other support
- Therefore, the education provided will reflect the source of
the funds being provided
- This then puts us in the age of Money Cycling
- What about the future??
- Cal Poly is at a major turning point
- We can proceed with the current direction. With this direction,
agriculture will become less and less a part of Cal Poly - and
less a part of the Land. This is a trend seen at most of the major
universities in the USA over the past 10 years.
- Or.....Cal Poly could embrace a new direction. This direction
would recognize the interrelationship of a healthy land, a healthy
agriculture, a healthy society, and a healthy economy. This would
require a much higher level of integration of disciplines
